How to Take Care of Your Sleep Cycle?

We are asleep for about a third of our lives. If you think that’s not enough, it is just the beginning! A standard adult needs to sleep for 7-8 hours every day to stay healthy, alert and stress-free. Fortunately, the world is moving toward a healthier lifestyle now, and people are getting conscious of their mental and physical health. What is a Sleep Cycle?

A sleep cycle is a term used to describe the process by which a person’s body goes through different stages of sleep.

There are two main phases: 

REM (rapid eye movement)

NREM (non-rapid eye movement). 

The length of each is also dependent on individual factors, such as age, health and sleeping environment. Deep NREM sleep lasting is from five to 20 minutes on average. REM sleep is usually shorter and lasts for an average of 10 minutes. It begins abruptly and ends abruptly, but can be interrupted by vivid dreams or waking up.

As with most other things in life, there are some important things to keep in mind when you’re going through your sleep cycles. 

  • First and foremost is that everyone sleeps at their own pace and they need to respect that. 
  • In addition, it’s important to get enough rest as it will allow the body to function better and keep the mind alert. Not only that, but a lack of sleep can lead to problems like fatigue, irritability and poor concentration.

Why the human body needs a Sleep Cycle?

The human body is made up of over 100 trillion cells. Each cell has a DNA code that determines its function and behaviour. When one cell dies, it releases chemicals that signal other nearby cells to die as well. This causes the entire body to start the process of dying. To keep from dying, the body must find a way to replicate new cells quickly. 

One way this is done is by going through a sleep cycle every day. During this, your brain goes into a state of rest and becomes less active. This helps your body produce more new cells.

When you are in a deep sleep, your brain produces hormones that tell other organs in your body to slow down or stop working altogether. This helps keep your body from dying and keeps you alive!

The importance of maintaining a healthy sleep cycle

Maintaining a healthy sleep cycle can have a significant impact on overall health and well-being. 

  • It is undoubtedly one of the most crucial forms of rejuvenation, restoring energy levels and promoting optimal functioning of the brain and body. 
  • It also plays an important role in maintaining good mental health, as it encourages restful relaxation and the processing of emotions.

Inadequate sleep moreover can lead to drowsiness during the day, which can be dangerous for those with underlying medical conditions or who are driving or operating machinery. While short periods of deprivation may not have long-term effects, chronic sleep deprivation can build up over time and eventually contribute to serious medical conditions such as diabetes and heart disease.

Along with a healthy diet, routine exercise and stress management techniques, maintaining a regular sleep schedule is one of the keys to well-being.

Ways to Improve your Sleep Cycle

Sleep and wake early 

Sleeping early at night is necessary as your body functions most at night. This would give the rest to your body cells to release the necessary growth hormones as well as others to run efficiently the metabolic activities in the body. 

If the cycle is disturbed,  you choose to stay at night and sleep during the day, there are most chances of getting diseases, having increased appetite, more obesity and laziness. 

Set up a Sleep Schedule 

Setting up a sound s schedule will help you to maintain a healthy sleep cycle. Set out an alarm to wake up early. Finish your tasks at night earlier by the limit that you have set. Don’t stay much after that time. 

Choose the calm space 

A calm space or environment is necessary to get adequate and sound sleep. Cut out the noise, make your bed as smooth as you can and lie in that room where you feel comfortable. 

This way you won’t wake up undergoing small naps at night. Hence, a proper 6- 8 hours of sleep will help you wake up fresh, brighter and more active. 

Limit daytime naps 

One of the main reasons you can’t sleep early at night is you are napping the whole day long. And thus, you stay up the whole night. This disturbs the cycle. 

Avoid napping daytime for many hours. Just get an adequate nap of half an hour at noon and that’s quite enough to get you functioning during the long day. 

Avoid eating high-calorie food before sleeping 

The reason for non-sleepiness at night is eating high-calorie food, junk or fast food at night. The body is unable to digest it actively hence, you observe disturbances in your sleep cycle. Moreover, you have to avoid overeating at night. 

Practise regular exercises 

Exercising helps a lot! Whether it is concerned with your body health, mental health, or the sleep cycle, exercise works like a magic for all. And in return, you will get a stronger, more active and healthy body.
